Discover the 2019 VW Tiguan

The 2019 VW Tiguan is a three-row compact SUV that features a spacious cabin, an abundance of intuitive technology, plenty of cargo space, and an outstanding warranty. It also offers a wide variety of trims to fit any need. Let’s break it down.

Trims and Features

The 2019 VW Tiguan is available several trims and configurations, including the S, SE, SEL, SEL R-Line, SEL Premium, and SEL Premium R-Line. Packed with an array of standard and optional features, drivers and passengers alike will want for practically nothing.

The S trim comes well-equipped with standard and optional features like 17-inch wheels, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, roof rails, a six-speaker audio system, heated side mirrors, USB connectivity, automatic headlights, a 6.5-inch touchscreen infotainment display, cloth upholstery, Bluetooth, a 40/20/40-split folding rear seat, and a backup camera. There’s also VW’s Car-Net App Connect system, which allows the control of certain apps from the touchscreen. But it’s not just convenience offered on this trim; safety is built into this level, too. An available Driver Assistance package includes rear cross-traffic alert, forward collision monitoring, blind-spot alert, and forward automatic emergency braking.

The Tiguan SE comes standard with the above Driver Assistance equipment plus two additional USB ports, heated washer nozzles, voice commands, keyless entry and ignition, satellite and HD radio, dual-zone climate control, an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment display, simulated leather upholstery, a leather-covered steering wheel, a power driver’s seat, and heated front seats. A panoramic sunroof is also available to give the car a livelier feel.

The Tiguan SEL Premium steps up to adaptive LED headlights, automatic high-beams, automatic wipers, lane departure alert and intervention, a hands-free liftgate, a 360-degree parking camera system, a digital instrument cluster, a premium Fender nine-speaker audio system, leather upholstery, and a heated steering wheel.

The Tiguan SEL R-Line builds on the SEL trim then upgrades to 19-inch wheels and sportier exterior styling cues. The SEL Premium R-Line builds on the SEL Premium trim and includes 20-inch wheels and sportier exterior styling accents.

Performance

All 2019 VW Tiguan models come with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that delivers 184 hp and 221 lb-ft of torque to the front wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission. There’s also the option of purchasing all-wheel drive (AWD). The powertrain is quite responsive and can accelerate from 0-60 mph within 9.5 seconds, which is good for its class. As for the brakes? They’re strong and provide for smooth and confident stops. The Tiguan can come to a full stop when traveling at 60 mph within 131 feet, which is excellent for its size and class.

The steering feels light and natural with little feedback. Switching to Sport mode improves overall steering, handling, and responsiveness. The Tiguan has approximately 8 inches of ground clearance so you can feel confident when traveling off-road. The AWD system features hill start assist, hill descent control, and a terrain selector with settings for snow and other off-road conditions.

As for the fuel economy, front-wheel drive (FWD) models have an EPA rating of 22 mpg city/29 highway. AWD models have a rating of 21 city/29 highway.

Styling

The Tiguan has a bold design that features a nice mix of curves and simple straight lines. It has an overall length of 185 inches and a wheelbase that measures 110 inches. The front fascia features an attractive wide grille. The large side doors make entering and exiting the vehicle a breeze. The rear door is long, making it easy to load/unload cargo. All models feature LED taillights that sit high above the bumpers.

Utility

The Tiguan has plenty of storage space for small items like deep storage pockets, bins, and space in the doors to accommodate two water bottles. The center console is quite deep and the front cupholders were designed to prevent tip-overs. The cargo area has a capacity of 37.6 cubic feet before folding down the third row. With the third row folded, capacity increases to 73.5 cubic feet. The second-row outboard seats feature two LATCH anchors that are easily accessible. The tethers are located at the bottom of the second-row seatbacks.

Pricing

Base pricing for the 2019 VW Tiguan starts at MSRP $24, 295.
